In New York, the spectacular "food hall" designed by Jean-Georges Vongerichten is closing its doors. An XXL project, a grandiose setting, but an economic gamble that didn't last the distance.

It was one of the most ambitious gastronomic projects of recent years. The Tin Building, designed by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichtenofficially closed its doors in New York at the end of February. Located in the historic South Street Seaport, this vast food hall brought together restaurants, counters and delicatessens in a spectacular setting. Inaugurated in 2022 after an investment of nearly $200 million, the venue was to embody a new culinary destination in New York. Despite the scale of the project, attendance failed to break even. Accumulated losses led to the site’s closure. Only The Fulton, the adjoining seafood restaurant, continues to operate. By summer 2026, the building will be home to the Balloon Museum – a new page for this emblematic site, between industrial memory and contemporary dreams.
