A discreet institution in Saanen, the Sonnenhof will not be reopening this summer. Its owners, Louise and Erich Baumer, are stepping down after decades of dedication to their home.

In Saanen, the Restaurant Sonnenhof has announced that it will not be reopening this summer, bringing to an end a decades-long adventure led by Louise and Erich Baumer. Having taken over the reins in 1999, the owners acquired the property in 2003 alongside local real estate partners. Since then, the Sonnenhof has established itself as an address deeply rooted in its environment, as much for its cuisine as for its garden, carefully tended with the passing seasons. In an emotional message, Louise and Erich Baumer speak of the gradual wear and tear of the business: the difficulty of recruiting staff, an increasingly demanding work rhythm and a daily burden that has become too heavy to bear. “It’s important to remain reasonable and take care of your health,” they write with touching sincerity. The owners also thank their teams, their partners and, above all, their loyal customers, after “54 successful summer and winter seasons”. A special mention goes to Christine von Siebenthal, who has been with the Sonnenhof since the very beginning. The couple are now looking forward to a new chapter in their lives, quieter and closer to family and friends. As for the future of the Sonnenhof, more information on a possible reopening in winter 2026/27 is expected from the project partners in the near future.
