Raphaël Mathon-Goupil, keys to the heart
At the Hotel Beau-Rivage Genève, the head concierge embodies a tradition of discreet excellence, made up of the right gestures and promises kept. Behind his golden keys is a man who has lived through night, illness and the secrets of the palace to better open the doors of the world and those of the heart.
He speaks softly, as if afraid of disturbing the intimacy of the lobby. Raphaël Mathon-Goupil has that rare way of occupying space without ever making it his own. In the heart of Beau-Rivage in Geneva, he doesn’t just greet guests, he welcomes them with a subtle discretion that is essential in his profession. In addition to the famous gold keys on the lapel of his navy-blue jacket, there’s a look, a voice and a way of moving. And behind all this politeness, there’s a story out of the ordinary. Let’s listen to the story of a man who makes a habit of listening to the customers they meet along the way.

Ski jack
As a child, Raphaël was already hitting golf balls before he could even walk. Missillac, a chateau, a hotel, customers: a dream setting with a premonition. Yet young Raphaël dreamed of becoming a veterinary surgeon. Life, as it often does, led him down a different path. For a time, he discovered the world of interior design, before climbing to the heights of Savoy, almost by chance. In 2012, when he landed the job of ski valet at the Les Airelles luxury hotel in Courchevel, he discovered the perfection of detail and a notion of service pushed to its paroxysm.
“In the cities or the south, you have valets for cars and in the mountains valets for skis. But the principle remains the same: to welcome customers, with hot chocolate, cookies, boots and skis ready and gloves heated,” he recalls. A bit of a maniac, young Raphaël relishes this role, where personalization knows no bounds. Perfect knowledge of the weather, total mastery of the ski area and the comings and goings of the snow groomers are all part of his daily routine. For the summer season, he swaps skis for cars and heads for the famous Byblos hotel in Saint-Tropez.

Muffled silence
Before he had the golden keys to the concierge service, he held the keys to the rooms, at night, in the hushed silence of the palace corridors. A year and a half as concierge and night receptionist, during his 2016 stint at the Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues. Months perfecting the art of service, observing expectations, desires and having gestures precede words. But sometimes, life imposes its own temporality. In 2018, illness forced him to take a step back. Cancer, chemo and the need to step back. “Life left me no choice but to take a break,” he says modestly. He’ll come back even stronger.
In 2022, he became Head Concierge at Beau-Rivage Genève, an establishment he likes to call “a house close to his heart”. From the outset, he has enjoyed a privileged relationship with the Mayer family, the former owners. “It’s a rare opportunity”, he confides, before continuing, “to be at the service of a house whose soul you know. The stars are as aligned as ever with the Casacuberta family, who took over the hotel in 2020”. For Raphaël, the role of the concierge is much more than a simple function: he is the guardian of history. That of a hotel, a city and a moment.

No limits, well almost…
No two days are alike. The concierge lives to the customer’s rhythm: his moods, his whims and, of course, his emergencies. As soon as dawn breaks, he or she consults the handover of instructions – what happened during the night, arrivals, departures, the details that make all the difference. It’s all about anticipation. And limits: “The only limit, the one that remains legal and morally acceptable,” he smiles. For the rest, he never says no: he twists, he sublimates, he finds something better.
His pleasure? Turning the impossible into the possible. Offer a private helicopter ride, privatize a downtown boutique, or simply find the right restaurant at the right time, the one that will bring a smile to your face. “We are the ambassadors of a city,” he proudly reminds us. For in the symbol of the Clefs d’Or (of which he is Geneva’s president), there is a spiritual echo: that of the Pope’s crossed keys, guardians of knowledge, transmission and responsibility. In the past, the conciergerie was the guard of the palace, of prisons and secrets.

Excellence from the heart
“Even today, we’re still opening doors and connecting worlds,” he reminds us. A fraternity of service and trust, with over 4,000 members worldwide. To become a member, you need time: five years in the business, including three in concierge services. A requirement commensurate with prestige. In Geneva, there are currently 22 members. A small, discreet but influential circle, sharing the same motto: “Service through friendship”. A mantra that resonates with this man who advocates service through excellence, and excellence through the heart.
