The new Château Mouton Rothschild label

In his autobiography Vivre la Vigne, published in 1981, Baron Philippe de Rothschild wondered whether the centenary of his arrival at Château Mouton Rothschild would be celebrated. His wish has come true: the label for the 2022 vintage of Château Mouton Rothschild illustrated with an original work by French artist Gérard Garouste is just the tribute Baron Philippe was hoping for. It was in 1922 that Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the reins of the château. For this anniversary of a founding moment in the history of the estate, Gérard Garouste has created a symbolic and dreamlike coat of arms for Mouton Rothschild, framed on the pediment by a portrait of the Baron and a ram, his well-known emblem. Gérard Garouste’s inspiration came from his discussions with Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild and the various photos of Baron Philippe that he consulted. Sketching various creative ideas in his notebooks, the idea of a portrait of the Baron, accompanied by the strong symbols of the ram, the pediment and the vine, quickly took shape. Conceived in the form of a gouache, he naturally chose to call the label Hommage au Baron Philippe.
