This week, Axel Caubet from Pompette changes scenery and heads for the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria, to Michael Gindl’s Hohenruppersdorf. This appellation, which not so long ago was at the northern limit of vine-growing, now finds itself with some big advantages in the face of the scorching summers we’ve had in recent years…
Michael decided early on to continue the work of his grandparents on the family estate, keeping to the old methods, biodynamics of course. He makes no secret of the fact that he makes the wines he likes to drink and doesn’t give a damn about trends… If he had to sum them up in one word, it would be minerality.
The soils are lively, loamy, clayey and sandstone; they bring such energy that the grape varieties fade into the background on tasting, and Michael has a style all his own, recognizable at first taste. On this Buteo cuvée, the old Gruner Veltliner vines have nevertheless found their feet, bringing depth and a certain wisdom to perfectly match the mineral power.
