Let’s meet Morgane Covino-Bellido and Charles Villa from Wine District for this week’s Bottle Food. The duo propose a Côte-rôtie “La Viallière” Jean Michel Gerin 2020. The estate is fortunate to have acquired some of the most renowned vineyards in Côte-rôtie, including the emblematic La Landonne, Les Grandes Places and La Viallière. It is the latter cuvée that is presented to us.
Planting of this parcel began in 2003 and represents a titanic task on slopes ranging from 40% to 60%. This superb, south-southeast-facing Syrah is 100% destemmed, then macerated for 25 days before being aged in demi muids for 18 months. Côte-Rôtie La Viallière is a powerful yet extremely elegant wine, with beautiful spicy notes and tannins that develop a patina over time, giving the wine fabulous complexity. This rare wine is a perfect match for autumn dishes such as poultry supreme with wild mushrooms or venison cooked at low temperature.
