Here, nothing seems to have been put together to follow a trend or to tick the boxes of international luxury. Epochs, colors, and influences blend freely. In a different way. A damascened piece of furniture dialogues with an unexpected fabric; an old photograph with an object from another world. Everything could clash. Famous faces have stayed here, but their fame matters little. The hotel seems to harbor an invisible accumulation of presences, conversations, and silences. The spirit of the place can be felt in every corner of the room and even out on the terrace, like an echo of Beirut, from which this house remains inseparable.

Before becoming a hotel, this building located in the heart of the Achrafieh neighborhood was called Maison Corm. Béchara Nammour, a Lebanese pioneer in the restaurant industry, bought it in 1980 during a lull in a war that had been tearing the city apart for five years. At the time, he wanted to open a restaurant there. But the house was located just a few dozen meters from the demarcation line. Fighting resumed, a barricade of stacked shipping containers and buses was erected in the street, and the project had to be put on hold.

A lounge at the Albergo Hotel ©DR

Keep Growing

It will be reborn with peace. In the early 1990s, as Beirut sought to rebuild both its walls and its spirit, L’Aldente opened on the ground floor. Then came the idea for a hotel. The old house was reinforced with concrete tie beams to allow for an addition, without disrupting the restaurant’s operations. The image resonates with me: strengthening what already exists to continue growing. It’s hard not to see something deeply Beiruti in that.

With Béchara and Rita Nammour at the center, architects, interior designers, and friends gradually brought the Albergo to life. Tarfa Salam shaped its aesthetic, selecting the fabrics and materials for the space. Later, their son, Richard, took the reins and carried on the legacy alongside Maria Ousseimi. The hotel continues to grow, adding terraces, a hanging garden, a swimming pool, a Swim Club, and a bar open to the sky. Yet, despite these transformations, it retains the intimacy of a home. In my opinion, that is the greatest compliment one can pay to a hotel.

From high above, Beirut unfolds in all its complexity. The rooftops of Achrafieh, the church steeples, the minarets, and, in the distance, the Mediterranean Sea. A city that has suffered so many wounds and is now going through a terribly difficult time. A city that refuses to give up its beauty, its energy, and its warmth toward visitors—and that remains defined by constant reconstruction, resilience, and a deep desire to move forward despite the crises.

The terrace at the Albergo Hotel ©DR

Beirut Comes Alive

That may be what moves me the most here.
