It is often intimidating to set foot on the threshold of a palace as steeped in history as the <\/span>Beau-Rivage<\/a> Geneva. But unlike many others, the hotel so dear to Sissi the Empress is far from following the ostentatious path and style of some of its peers. Historically owned by the Mayer family, the hotel on the shores of Lake Geneva passed into the hands of the Spanish Casacuberta group in the midst of a health crisis. As the last hotel bastion to be owned by a single family, the news had the effect of a minor revolution in Geneva’s hotel world. Even if the palace has always been in tune with its past, it is no less necessary to look to the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Itinerary of a gifted hotelier<\/h2>\n

Time flies when you’re comfortably seated in the small lounge next to the bar. With its hushed decor, white tablecloths and view of the water fountain and the Brunswick Monument, the interview is off to a flying start. The ice cubes in my glass of sparkling water are just beginning to crack as the new boss strides in. Shoes polished, suit impeccably tailored, tie perfectly knotted… the rigor of the hotel business is immediately apparent. As the Covid-19 hovers relentlessly overhead, we meet Robert Herr, the providential man responsible for writing the first lines of a new chapter for the Beau-Rivage hotel. <\/p>\n

Born into a family working in the hotel and catering industry, Robert’s interest in the profession was impressed from an early age. With the passage of time and without any parental pressure, he nevertheless allowed himself to be seduced by the siren song of the hotel business. “Even though I’m the only one of four children to follow this path, this world has always been part of my DNA,” he declares in excellent French with Germanic intonations, before continuing, “I didn’t take this professional direction out of obligation. My parents had no influence on my choice. <\/p>\n

Advanced studies<\/h2>\n

Attracted by the mix of theory and practice, he enrolled at the renowned \u00c9cole H\u00f4teli\u00e8re de Lausanne. The young student of American-Swiss origin quickly found fulfillment in his student life, and realized that he had made the right choice. With his diploma in hand, he joined an internationally renowned hotel group in 1994, which offered to finance his higher education in order to earn an MBA. After 23 years of loyal service, working in the corridors of eight hotels in different countries around the world and on different continents, he left the company. “Even if we remain within a group management philosophy with a certain degree of standardization, each establishment is culturally and structurally different. In fact, expectations were never the same. <\/p>\n

Strategic focus<\/h2>\n

In 2016, Robert Herr and his family moved to the Lucerne region. A new challenge, a new life! He takes on the management of a hotel entity that brings together a residence, a clinic and hotels under the same roof. Four years later, he arrived in Geneva with a mission to bring innovation and improvement to the hotel. Working closely with the new family of owners, he knows that the task is not an easy one. “While preserving the soul of the house, it is nevertheless necessary to constantly question and adapt to new consumer trends. There will be an evolution at the Beau-Rivage hotel, but not a transformation. The past is important, but the future is essential. With business clientele at half-mast, the leisure tourism segment is a strategic focus for management. How can we make the hotel offer more attractive to this category of customer? “By showcasing our expertise,” is the immediate answer.
