For a few days now, and to everyone’s surprise, the Plainpalais plain, in the heart of the city of Calvin, has been wearing its festive costume in the midst of a health crisis. It’s one foot in front too many for the catering industry, which is obliged to remain closed for reasons we all know. At a time when restaurateurs are unable to practice their profession, how can we explain the authorization of such an event? The Conseil d’Etat continues to go against the grain of any logical, consensual decision against a sector in the throes of collapse. This incomprehensible stance demonstrates once again the total isolation of the highest levels of government. <\/p>\n

Injustice and absurdity<\/h2>\n

Fabian Affentranger, owner of the Chez Calvin<\/a> and l’Esquisse Grill &<\/a> Bar restaurants, is dismayed at the sight of the funfair set up with impunity, while the terraces of his establishments remain padlocked. “From Plexiglas signs to digital plotting and compliance with strict health standards, our profession has accepted everything without flinching. And with so many people taking part and so much concentration, this is the last straw! <\/p>\n

Whose fault is it? The terraces are apparently under federal jurisdiction, and decisions are taken in Berne. How do you explain that a human gathering of this scale can be authorized by the Federal Council or the Council of State? “I think there’s a real lack of political courage, with everyone passing the buck without making any decisions. At some point, someone has to bang their fist on the table. Some trades are clearly better off than we are. <\/p>\n

The entrepreneur is not vindictive towards the fairground owners who have won their case, but he does want a joint authorization including the catering industry. “I’m in favor of a total reopening with a strict sanitary plan to be respected. How can we explain that we’re safe at Luna Park and in great danger with four people on a restaurant terrace? Honestly, who are we kidding? <\/p>\n

It’s hard to put a figure on the potential for transmission of the virus within the alleys of Plainpalais and the merry-go-rounds, but the damage has been done and the rupture begun. Once again, Geneva’s Council of State has shown its flagrant inconsistency by authorizing this event. Let’s continue to wait without flinching for our leaders to show some common sense, and maybe one day we’ll be able to wisely take our seats on a restaurant terrace! <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
