That day, we thought we were in England. And we were! The proof: typical British weather with umbrellas, boots and oilskins! A climatic paradox: the sun came out just after lunch. Now that we’ve detailed the vagaries of our English friends’ weather in the middle of July – a minor detail in this case – let’s cross the threshold of the River Caf\u00e9<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n

Industrial spirit<\/h2>\n

Part trendy restaurant with white tablecloths, part industrial-style refectory, the decor leaves no one indifferent. With its imposing pink pizza oven, open kitchen backed by an endless bar, and terrace on the banks of the Thames, the place is packed. You’ll have gathered by now that we’re settling in, hence the time details at the start of the story. After resisting the call of the Bellini, we peruse the temptingly titled menu in praise of Italian cuisine. <\/p>\n

The pizzetta is shared. A thin, crispy dough, topped with Taleggio, capers, a few potatoes and rosemary. Out of nearly thirty proposals, not a single truffle pizza is to be found… a highly appreciated culinary logic that certain seaside resorts should draw inspiration from (allusion to frozen pizzas with black Chinese truffles?). The battle for good taste is, at this stage, already lost. Let’s leave Saint-Tropez… oops, I said it and come back to London. The cappellacci stuffed with summer chanterelle mushrooms (yes, yes, it’s the season) and accompanied by ricotta and thyme are a thing of beauty, while the polenta escorted by crab, peas and wild fennel seduces with its unusual combinations. <\/p>\n

Dense chocolate<\/h2>\n

Even if you want to go off the beaten track, vittelo tonnato is a regularly proposed sin mignon, tasted over and over again, and often badly made. The River Caf\u00e9 takes it to new heights, embellishes it and even offers it with lentils. It’s hard to beat that! A marvellous seafood tasting follows with sea bass fillet, salsa verde and some grilled zucchini. The dense, rich chocolate cake and the almond and raspberry tart are exceptional. And it’s with beautiful summer sunshine that we leave the River Caf\u00e9 with light hearts and wallets. The stroll along the river is a sweet moment of reflection among the joggers and strollers.
