At 9 a.m. on this typically autumnal day, let’s be serious and not push the envelope so early in the morning! Intoxicated by the aromas of Arabica that fill the meeting room, the founder of Le Passeur de Vin takes us by the hand and leads us into a world of his own, that of an unusual fruit that is born in the earth and ends its spiritual life in the celestial stars. Without wishing to lay claim to an outdated winegrowing ideology, and despite differing opinions concerning alarmist traditional medicine, he is convinced that wine has never been man’s enemy.

Emmanuel Heydens at Passeur de Vin in Geneva ©Edouard Amoiel

A message to carry

Emmanuel Heydens is convinced that wine as a whole needs to reinvent itself in order to exist better, to be better understood and, above all, to be appreciated at its true worth. Like many of the speakers, he has noted a significant decline in wine consumption since the start of 2024. The foodservice sector, which has also suffered, is finding it harder to play its role as a loyal and inseparable partner of the wine industry. To fully appreciate this living product, we should ideally start by taking the time to get to know the winemakers and understand their daily lives. Tasting comes second.

Despite a recent price correction on the part of the Bordeaux world, wine prices as a whole have exploded over the last ten years. As in the restaurant business, finding qualified personnel willing to work in the vineyards is becoming increasingly problematic. “A tractor operator or a grape picker have become rare commodities”, he admits. How can we unite around a thought or a discourse, and challenge ourselves? Emmanuel Heydens will soon be offering an alternative range of wines, bringing back even more the notion of tailor-made experience, advice and even selection to build up a cellar. “We personally know all the winemakers whose products are on sale at Passeur de Vin. Passeur de Vin. This allows for an honest exchange with the customers who put their trust in us. From initial production to final consumption, it’s our duty to further strengthen the links between men and women”.

Le Passeur de Vin in Geneva ©Edouard Amoiel

Federating around an art of living

The conversation continues with determination, commitment and passion intact. For him, heart and emotion will always win out over reason and fixed codes. “What do we discover in a wine? Its terroir, its choice of rootstock, its grape variety, yes, but above all our impressions, our feelings, our instincts, our doubts, our fears, our hopes and our loves. If we are purely scientific, we disconnect ourselves from the essential and miss out on the beauty of life”. Encounters are as vital as ever for this fifty-year-old, who whispers in the ears of Jean-François Ganevat, Valentina Andreï and Chiara Pepe.

Unfazed by the modern, virtual world that surrounds us, Emmanuel Heydens knows he’s not alone in this spiritual quest, where the beauty of a Jura wine languorously intertwines with a pan of freshly-picked mushrooms. We’re theoretically more connected than ever, but in the end we’ve never been so disconnected. Emmanuel Heydens knows this, but doesn’t want to put up with it.

Always free

Emmanuel is the Passer and the Passer is Emmanuel. This touching character with deep-seated convictions pursues his path with self-sacrifice and freedom. Only time will tell whether his half-philosophical, half-progressive discourse will have an impact on the environment around him. Although I doubt that this is his objective.
